What does jailbreaking a PS5 do? The meaning, explained

Jailbreaking a PS5 means using a security flaw in the console's system software to remove its restrictions, so it can run programs that are not approved for the PlayStation, such as homebrew apps and emulators. In practice, a jailbroken PS5 is stuck on old system software, cannot sign in to PlayStation Network, cannot play many new games, and loses the jailbreak every time it restarts.

We do not recommend jailbreaking your console. This article explains what a jailbreak is and what it changes - it does not explain how to do it and does not link to any jailbreak tools. If you are deciding whether to do it, read our PS5 jailbreak pros and cons.
What does jailbreak mean on a PS5?
The word comes from the iPhone: the "jail" is the set of locks that decide what a device is allowed to run. On a PS5, those locks make sure only software approved for the console can start - games from the PlayStation Store or a disc, and official apps.
A jailbreak uses a flaw in a particular version of the system software to get past those locks. Once it runs, the console will start programs it would normally refuse. The jailbreak that made the news in October 2026, called Relapse, works only on system software from version 7.00 up to 13.60.
A "jailbroken PS5" is simply a console that is running one of these exploits. Nothing about the hardware changes - and that matters, because the jailbreak lives in memory and is gone after every restart.
What can a jailbroken PS5 do?
Less than most people expect. The real list is:
- Homebrew apps - small unofficial programs and tools that are not on the PlayStation Store.
- Emulators - reports say the new jailbreak can run emulators for other consoles.
- Tinkering - changing parts of the system that are normally locked, mostly for the challenge.
Some people jailbreak to play copies of games they did not buy. That is piracy: it is illegal in most countries, and it takes money from the studios that make the games.
What a jailbroken PS5 cannot do
| Normal PS5 | Jailbroken PS5 | |
|---|---|---|
| Sign in to PlayStation Network | Yes | No - needs newer system software |
| PlayStation Store and PS Plus | Yes | No |
| Online multiplayer and party chat | Yes | No |
| System updates | Yes | No - an update removes the jailbreak |
| New releases | Yes | Many need newer system software |
| Survives a restart | - | No, it has to be run again |
| Homebrew and emulators | No | Yes |
What happens if you jailbreak your PS5?
- You freeze the console on old system software. The jailbreak only works up to version 13.60, and the 14.00 update (16 September 2026) closes the flaw. System software cannot officially be rolled back, so the console has to stay where it is - for good.
- You lose PlayStation Network. Since mid-October 2026, signing in to PSN requires system software 14.10 or later, according to reports. A console on 13.60 cannot sign in at all: no store, no online play, no PS Plus, no cloud saves, no trophies syncing.
- New games stop working. Big releases usually need recent system software, and reports already describe new games that ask for version 14.00 or later. Every digital game, including the ones in our store, also needs a console that can sign in to PlayStation Network.
- You run it again after every restart. The jailbreak is "tethered": it does not survive a reboot, and each run can stall or crash the console. Crashes are how saves get corrupted.
- You run code from strangers. Jailbreak files come from forums and unofficial sites, on a device that holds your PlayStation account details.
Is the PS5 jailbreakable on every version?
No. The public jailbreak covers system software 7.00 to 13.60. Version 14.00 blocked it, and reports of a working jailbreak for 14.10 describe a private one that has not been released. A PS5 that has kept up with updates cannot be jailbroken today.
Is jailbreaking a PS5 safe?
Not really. The risks are crashes and corrupted saves, losing access to PlayStation Network, and malware hidden in unofficial files. Consoles found running unofficial code can also be banned from PlayStation Network, and the account used on them can be affected. Official support is unlikely to help with a console that has been tampered with.
Is jailbreaking a PS5 legal?
It depends on where you live, and we are not lawyers. In the United States, for example, the legal exemption that covers jailbreaking phones has not been extended to game consoles. What is clear almost everywhere: playing pirated games is illegal.
What about the PS4?
PS4 jailbreaks have been around for years and also only work on older PS4 system software. The trade-offs are the same: no updates, no safe online play, and fewer new games over time. Most PS4 games already run on a PS5 - see how to play PS4 games on PS5.
A better way to play more for less
If the real goal is more games for less money, you do not need to give up online play to get it. Full games in our store start at $7.99, new releases such as Phantom Blade Zero are $37.99, and you can pre-order Grand Theft Auto VI for $59.99 ahead of its 19 Nov 2026 release.

Questions people ask
What does a jailbroken PS5 mean?
It is a PS5 running an exploit that removes the console's software locks, so it can start unofficial programs such as homebrew apps and emulators. The hardware is unchanged, and the jailbreak is gone after a restart.

No. Since mid-October 2026, signing in to PSN requires system software 14.10 or later, and the public jailbreak only works up to 13.60.
Can a jailbroken PS5 play new games?
